ForTe bv succeeded in developing a new dry powder technology
for instant suspension solutions applicable for a wide range of
active ingredients used in human pharmaceutical and OTC products.
The instant suspension powder is a 'Stir & Use' cold water
suspendable powder mixture, consisting of pharmacopoeia ingredients,
with specific fast suspending properties and is designed for (high
dose) single or multi dose application. The viscosity of the final
suspension is adjustable in a wide range. This results in the
possibility to complete a custom-made product for oral administration
with a specific active ingredient, viscosity, with or without
(single dose) preservatives. The instant suspension powder is
suitable to be a carrier formulation for both ‘normal' release
and 'controlled' release active ingredients which are possibly
not stable, poorly soluble or insoluble in an aqueous based final
product. The suspension is easily formed and reconstitutable and
does not 'cake'. It is developed as an easy-use, low cost alternative
for current branded and/or generic suspensions but can also be
used as a formulation for new applications. Compared to currently
available suspension solutions, the ForTe single-dose dry suspension
powder increases patient compliance, shelf life, portability and
does not require a preservative system, while it substantially
decreases manufacturing and logistic costs.
ForTe has tested the technology with several active ingredients
for human pharmaceutical and OTC applications. For instance Antacids,
Analgesics, Antibiotics, Cough & Cold, Laxatives, Gum based
dietary products, Multi-Minerals (e.g. Calcium, Magnesium), Vitamin
supplements, amino acids etc. Accelerated stability testing (3
months) has been successfully performed.
In addition, ForTe developed an applied technology to complete
a range of palatable and stable Nutraceutical/OTC vitamin-mineral
solutions. The basic solution has good taste masking properties
and is suitable as a single or multi-dose application for which
various taste nuances can be adjusted. This has resulted in the
possibility to complete a custom-made product for oral administration
with specific vitamins and/or minerals, with or without (single-dose)
preservatives, suitable to be an easy alternative for currently
marketed (large) vitamin-mineral tablets. Compared to existing
solid vitamin-mineral products the ForTe technology avoids potential
swallowing problems when administered to the elderly or children,
whilst combining patient compliance and convenience with a pleasant
flavour. ForTe has tested the technology separately as a multivitamin
and multi-mineral product as well as in combination, and is currently
testing several analgesic active ingredients for pharmaceutical,
OTC applications.
