3M Health Care Ltd. is consolidating its European pharmaceutical manufacturing operations at one site in Loughborough, England. The Austin Company of U.K. Ltd. is providing design, engineering and construction services for the $20-million project, the largest facility investment ever made by 3M in the United Kingdom.
Central to the project is a 10,000-square-metre (107,600-square-foot) expansion of 3M’s existing manufacturing and distribution facility in Loughborough. The addition will replace two nearby plants from which staff and production equipment will be relocated.
Low-bay and high-rise warehousing space, distribution support offices, and areas for marshalling and logistics have already been handed over to 3M. This first phase of the expansion was timed so that 3M could start building up stock prior to validation, equipment installation and completion of the packaging lines.
Phase two, also completed according to schedule, involved the construction and facility validation of the new solid-dose packaging area, as well as filling and packing areas for liquids and creams.
The final stage includes construction, equipment installation and facility validation of the new liquids and creams manufacturing areas. Vessels are being relocated on a phased basis to ensure continuity of operations. In addition to the upgrade of existing vessels, a new deionized water system is being installed.
In a separate assignment at the Loughborough site, Austin recently provided design and construction services to 3M for the remodeling of aerosol packaging areas inside the existing plant. Special safety precautions had to be taken in order to minimize the impact of construction on adjacent clean-room areas.
3M Health Care Ltd. is part of 3M U.K. PLC, a subsidiary of the U.S.-based multinational conglomerate, 3M.
